Camels were used here in the 19th Century to transport goods such as olive oil, cotton and grapes down to the harbour from the Xanthos valley. From here the goods were loaded onto cargo ships and taken all over the Ottoman Empire. Kalkan bay was used as shelter during the battles between the Greeks and Romans.
