Then there’s the beach. Stretching along the shore for six kilometres, there’s so much sand to sink into and the waters are full of sports, fishing and boat trips. Beach life
There’s heaps of beach to go around at Cala Millor as it stretches for the entire length of the town and has been awarded the European Blue Flag status for its cleanliness and quality of facilities. The rocky headlands at either end protect the bay and make it great for paddling as well as bolder water activities.
Water skiing and board-sailing are popular activities here, as is finding your feet at the windsurfing school. Hop on a boat and you can go fishing, diving or spot marine creatures without getting wet on a glass-bottomed boat. If you did want to dive into the sea, the captain usually stops for 30 minutes for a chance to jump over board and cool off.
Snorkelling here is pleasing in the clear waters. If you swim north towards Cala Bona the rocky headland is home to large barracudas and you can walk back the scenic way along the prom in 15 minutes.
A packed promenade
Take your pick of the restaurants and shops on the pedestrianised promenade just back from the beach. No matter what you fancy for lunch or dinner you can have it here as there are traditional Spanish eateries, British pubs, steakhouses, seafood restaurants and more. The promenade is also a great place to cycle or skate along and the start of Segway¢ tours of the town.
Wandering in and out of the shops selling clothes, souvenirs and beach items is a pleasant pastime. If you want to treat yourself then the northern end of prom has a few designer stores, such as Tommy Hilfiger. Bargain-hunters after cheap holidays to Majorca will love the delightful handmade crafts the Monday market at Manacor, or just 20 minutes’ drive away the capital Palma has a wider range of retail experiences.
Eventful evenings
Couples who come here will love the opportunity to hang out in Cala Millor’s fun bars, many of which stay open until 2am. Kids are welcome in lots of venues and you’ll find family-friendly entertainment such as bingo and quizzes.
To make a night of it, Palace Q – also known as Q Club – is the place for dancing to Spanish and international tunes until 6am. There are no big dance music nightclubs though, for that you should head to Magaluf or Santa Ponsa.
Walk on the wild side
On the headland towards Sa Coma, Punta Amer is a beautiful area of protected nature reserve. On the way to the 17th century Castell de n’Amer watchtower, the 45-minute walk will reward you with bird’s eye views of the town. You can quench your thirst with a drink at the bar at the top and get the best views of all.
There are a number of nature tours to take from the town including trips of the countryside on motorised buggies and mopeds. Rancho Willy’s is an established riding school that takes groups on horseback tours of the mountains and countryside, or you could hire mountain bikes and navigate a personal tour.
For a little less exertion, hop on to the ‘Little Train’ that links Cala Millor with Sa Coma and Cala Bona and see the area from the comfort of your seat. This is the perfect excursion for those on family holidays to Majorca who want to explore the beautiful landscape.
A multitude of activities
There are so many attractions to choose from around Cala Millor that you’ll be hard pressed to squeeze everything in to a week’s holiday.
On the outskirts of neighbouring Sa Coma, drive yourself around the Safari Zoo through herds of zebras, giraffes and elephants. Or if you didn’t hire a car then you can choose the zoo’s mini-train instead. It’s easy to get there on the courtesy bus from town.
A hit with the kids is Fantasy Park outdoor play area in the centre of Cala Millor, which is jam-packed with bouncy castles, rides and trampolines. Or you might all enjoy a walk through Parc de la Mar gardens next door.
At nearby Manacor, hidden within the 1000 year old Caves of Drach is one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. While you’re at Manacor you could check out its artificial pearl production and perhaps buy a few as souvenirs.
Other places to enjoy in the area are two go-kart tracks on the main Avenida, a water park at Alcudia less than an hour away and three good 18-hole golf courses within a 20 minute drive.
Colourful regatta
If you’re lucky enough to be in Cala Millor for the last five days of October you won’t be able to miss the colourful hot air balloons filling the sky as over 60 balloons race in the ‘Bahia de Cala Millor’ international regatta.
