Santo Tomas is the go-to holiday for those looking for rest and relaxation, whether you’re enjoying Menorca package holidays as a family, a couple, or travelling on your own. Take time to explore

You’re within easy reach of the larger resort of Son Bou with its small waterpark and wooden maze as well as some beach bars that stay open late. Other things to do nearby include trips to bustling markets, taking part in watersports, hikes, cycle rides and boat trips.

The resort is peaceful and secluded, but still well connected by public transport. If you’ve hired a car, then lucky you! You’ll be able to dart around the island in style. Go from beach to bar, restaurant to resort, and still be back in time to catch the sunset from a terrace with a beer in hand and a belly full of fine Spanish food.

Time to get wet

If you’re staying in Santo Tomas, you’ll have fun in the sun on tap. The three kilometres of beach here is the major attraction of the resort. It feels isolated and is backed by beautiful scenery, but just a short walk down the seafront and you’ll come across an array of exciting sports for the whole family to try their hand at. From pedalos to banana boats, this strip of paradise will have you out on the waves in no time.

If you’ve got little ones, then take them out on a glass-bottomed boat trip, or take a snorkelling adventure looking through the surface of the crystal clear waters. Bigger kids won’t be able to resist windsurfing or having a ride on a motorboat, making this an ideal choice for a family holiday to Menorca. You can kick it with your shades and magazine on the beach, while they fall in the drink over and over again. It’s okay, they won’t see you laughing.

City trips or country sights

Just around the corner from Santo Tomas, the municipal districts of Es Migjorn Gran and Es Mercadal are beautiful neighbourhoods with lots of attractions you can drop in on whenever you like. These are ideal opportunities to see authentic Menorcan living, with tapas bars and coffee shops which cater for the local residents and passing visitors.

One such exciting draw of Es Migjorn Gran is the colourful and popular local food market that is held every Wednesday. You’ll be able to buy fresh produce from the farmers of Menorca – the perfect ingredients for a picnic lunch. You can then take your lunch off into the wild, with country roads offering a great afternoon walk to scenic lookout points over valleys.

If one market isn’t enough, then head a little further to Es Mercadal market on Sunday. This weekly tradition was established way back in the 14th Century, and has only improved with age. Make sure you get there before the siesta, to get your hands on all the goodies. Es Mercadal is overlooked by Mount Toro, which invites you to scale to the highest point on the whole of Menorca.

Climb a mountain

Santo Tomas is a short bus or car ride from the foot of Mount Toro, which isn’t just any mountain, it’s the spiritual centre of Menorca. You can arrange a guided tour up Mount Toro, or go it alone and find your own way as far up as you care to go. Remember, this is the highest point on the island, which means the best views too.

The Sanctuary of the Mare de Deu del Toro, at the peak of the mountain, is now home to a small community of nuns and is a lookout point across the whole of Menorca. As you soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the place you can rest easy knowing your journey back is all down-hill.

Join the festivities

If you’re visiting in summer, you’ll be delighted to hear that a number of fiestas will be there to greet you when you reach the foot of Mount Toro. These are held in the towns nearby Santo Tomas, and involve a number of sporting and musical performances.

During Ciutadella‘s Festes de Sant Joan, on and around the 24th June, horses march through the streets to the sounds of a crowd enjoying the evening’s festivities.
