Holidays in the slow lane
Where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean is where you’ll find the laid-back shores of Sarigerme, a popular destination for cheap holidays to Turkey, that knows how to take things nice and slow. It’s located along Turkey’s southwestern coast, about a 20-minute drive from Dalaman, though its quiet, sun-kissed shores feel like they’re in a world of their own.
Sarigerme has seven kilometres of sand, where kiteboarding and diving take centre the stage. Many holidaymakers are tempted to stay within the grounds of their cushy hotels, but you’d be wise to branch out with so much on the horizon. We’re talking the mud baths of Dalyan and shop-heavy Marmaris – plus the Greek island of Rhodes is just over the water.
Life's a beach
Sarigerme Beach is part of a National Park Conservation Area as the ancient city of Pisilis is buried beneath it. Holidaymakers need to pay a small fee to use the beach but its seven-kilometre stretch is well-equipped with toilets, cafes, a shady picnic area and a mini-zoo to keep little ones entertained. This area tends to attract fewer crowds compared to other Turkish resorts, so finding your perfect spot on the beach is never too hard. Laze in the sun or stay energetic and give kiteboarding a go as an extra activity outside your Turkey holiday package. The beach is an easy 15-minute stroll from the centre of the village, and there are regular road-train services.
Get active
If you’ve never tried kiteboarding, a holiday in Sarigerme is the time to start. Courses for beginners are held on the beach, or there’s equipment to hire for the more experienced. Thanks to its excellent conditions, Sarigerme also hosts an annual kite-flying festival in the sun.
But it’s not all about kiteboarding here – the area marks the spot where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean, so the waves can be bigger. There’s also a scuba diving centre.
Eating out
As a small resort which hasn’t been overly commercialised eating out tends to be a low-key and traditional affair. Many holidaymakers dine within their hotels, but the town offers an authentic experience and a chance to meet the locals.
Many of the eateries major in seafood, including the modern and aptly-named Fish House Restaurant. Enjoy sundowners at the Dolphin Bar, a spot that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. There’s a relaxed atmosphere with comfy beanbags strewn over artificial grass, and the bar serves a good selection of informal food.
The Hilton Golf Resort Hotel welcomes non-residents, so if you’re looking for an upscale dining experience or enjoy Thai food, you can always pay them a visit.
What's happening nearby?
While Sarigerme is a quiet resort, it’s within easy reach of many attractions – including the ancient city of Ephesus. Alternatively, make the short hop across the sea and enjoy the Greek island of Rhodes.
Mud baths in nearby Dalyan have something of a celebrity following, and have been visited by stars including Jack Nicholson and David Bowie. Even for us non-celebrities, the thermal springs and mud baths are said to have amazing healing properties which work wonders for everyday aches and pains.
For shopaholics looking for their fix, head to Marmaris – this big, bustling resort is great for bargain-hunting. Alternatively, you can stop by the market town of Ortaca and find handmade goods including belts, bags, clothes and pottery. Don’t be shy – the stallholders will be disappointed if you don’t barter for a better deal.
Get back to nature with some turtle-watching and take a day trip to Lake Koycegiz, which is home to freshwater turtles. The waters are clear so it’s relatively easy to spot them alongside the boat. As the lake joins the sea you might even catch a glimpse of rare loggerhead sea turtles.
