Last Minute Holidays to Spain

Whatever you’re after from your holiday – relaxing poolsides, cultural city adventures, vibrant nightlife, fabulous beaches, fantastic cuisine – you are sure to find it in Spain.

Barcelona in the Costa Brava is one of the most popular destinations for city breaks for shopping, culture, history and football. There’s the celebrity favourite, the sophisticated and chic Marbella as well as the energetic beaches of Benidorm. Immerse yourself in Spanish culture and adjust to the slower “mañana” pace of life in the beautiful Alicante or the cosmopolitan Valencia.

If an island escape is what you are after there’s nowhere better than the Balearics islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza and with many sun-filled resorts to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can combine the architecturally stunning city of Palma or the lively nightlife of Magaluf with gorgeous beaches in Majorca. There is no bigger or better reputation for nightlife than that of the legendary Ibiza and away from the clubbing there are captivating beaches to discover, or perhaps recover from the night before! If a quieter escape is more your style head to the pretty island of Menorca for a warm welcome and stunning scenery.

Popular all year round are the sun drenched islands of the Canaries. Enjoy some fun in the sun in Tenerife and take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Teide, visit the sweeping beaches of Gran Canaria and shop ’til you drop in the capital Las Palmas. Discover some of natures wonders in the Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote where there is a huge area of dormant volcanoes or visit the breath-taking, almost desert like 11 km long dune area on Fuerteventura in the Corralegio National Park.

Wherever you head to there is just one thing to warn you of, holidays to Spain can be addictive and could find you going back year after year!

There’s much more to taking a mobile phone on holiday these days than a quick text home to tell your loved ones you arrived safely and that the weather’s nice. A good smartphone app can be a holidaymaker’s best friend and has compiled a list of the best so you can make the most of your week in the sun.

There are 17,000 travel apps on the market, giving you a hand with everything from booking flights, finding the exact location of your accommodation, to help while away boring plane and coach journeys. Here are our favourites:

1. Lonely Planet – £3.49 (Android, iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, Nokia)
The guidebook experts offer the best breadth of content in their 125 easy-to-use city guides and phrase books including key advice on hotels, restaurants and all sorts of attractions. They also do 25 ‘Compass Guides’ and five e-books for the iPad.

2. Google Earth – FREE (Android, Blackberry, iPhone/iPod Touch, Nokia)
This ingenious app gives holidaymakers the opportunity to ‘fly’ to their holiday destination for a bird’s eye view of their hotel, swimming pool, resort and whatever else they need to check out. If the brochure blurb says you’re going to be a stone’s throw from the beach, you don’t need to take their word for it anymore.

3. Xe Currency Exchange – FREE (Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod Touch)
There’s no need to guess anymore, this simple live currency converter means you can convert the price of a pint immediately to make sure you’re not being ripped off.

4. Yelp! – FREE (Android and iPhone)
This is the go-to app for choosing a restaurant. Users can search for the type of food they like from dinner to cupcakes, see ratings and the number of people that have given the venue 4 or 5 stars, and as an added bonus even check out the most popular menu items so you know what the restaurant does well.

5. Panoramio – FREE (Android and iPhone)
This app lets you search for the most photographed locations where you are, and the chances are if lots of people are taking photos of somewhere then it’s a sight worth seeing. It’s very easy to use as well, you just pick a location, search, and it brings up lots of map pins and a list of possibilities. This is great for sunset pics in particular.

6. Sunscreen – FREE (IPhone)
Search ‘sunscreen’ on your apps finder
While most holidaymakers want a super suntan, no one wants to look like a lobster. The tan-tastic app calculates the strength of the sun wherever you are and beeps to remind you to slap on that sun-cream, so even if you fall asleep you can get protected.

So there you go, download these before you fly, and you’ll have an even ‘appier holiday. Also, don’t forget to speak to your network and get a deal on 3G overseas before you fly so it doesn’t cost a fortune once you’re abroad. Hits Manchester And Launches Its #BeLate Campaign
