Get ready to be welcomed by medieval palaces, rich history and enchanting old folk’s tales when you visit some of Austria’s impressive villages.

Take your pick from green meadows, mountain trails or cooling your toes in one of the region’s five lakes, there’s plenty of adventures to be had. Start off in the village if Alpach, where classic shuttered chalets and balconies are filled with flowers, it’s the perfect spot to relax and famous for its ingenious architecture. Head to Lech for an early afternoon trek through the pine forests before a spot of retail therapy in the selection of stylish boutique shops. If the bustling town of Kitzbuhel or scenic Kaprun is more your style, you’ll find plenty of character nestled by the lake sides and historical centres.

Local events will inspire you throughout the summer, the Kitzbuhel wine festival and Austria’s World Music festival to name a few. Austrians love a party with street markets and celebrations, you’ll catch the locals taking over the town square with dancing and festivities.

Head on an exciting excursion to the film spot of The Sound of Music in Salzburg City, spend time walking through the gardens of Mirabell and Hellbrunn Palace. Or check out the healing waterfalls of Krimml, all set in the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park. A chance to discover some of Austria’s best kept secret lakes and hidden fortress lie in Walchsee and Kufstein. Not to mention Austria is the home to one of the best skiing resorts, you’ll find little mountain-side villages such as Feldkirch and Innsbruck.

All that sightseeing can work up your appetite, the most popular dish in Austria is the weiner schnitzel, traditionally made from veal it’s a standard dish from all over the country.

If you’re heading to the snow-capped mountain and lake sides, Brettljause – a tasty platter of cheeses, cold cuts, picked vegetables and bread baskets – is another must. You might be surprised to find Kebab shops on every other street corner, despite originating thousands of miles away, it seems Austrians can’t get enough of the takeaway favourite either.

Now onto the good stuff, dessert! Palatschiken is a tasty sweet made up of pancakes or crepes stuffed with apricot jam and rolled with scoops of vanilla ice cream on top. Famous all over the world is the legendary apple strudel, indulge in thin pastry sheets, apple and hot vanilla sauce, tasty.

Your tastebuds aren’t finished yet because not only is Austrian wine and beer a favourite among holidaymakers, Strum and Most in particular are drinks you should sample. Both at different stages of the wine making process that lies between the grape juice and wine, you’ll be taking them home as souvenirs. It’s worth noting Strum is only available in September and tastes extremely sweet and Most, in comparison, is a sour tasting wine.

Step back in time

Austria still lives and breathes its historic past. You’ll find this when your exploring museums, old fortresses and talking to the locals. Known as the Austrian Empire due to its Roman associations, when you explore the Fortress of Hohensalzburg and Mirabell Palace you’ll come across ancient ruins and fascinating architecture.

Of course, there are plenty of natural wonders to be explored too. Featuring an underground ice cave, Eisriesenwelt also known as the Palace of Ice and in the heart of the Salzkammergut lies one peak called Schafberg which boasts incredible views overlooking the Wolfgangsee Lake.

Home of the Winter Olympics twice and fondly referred to as the winter sports capital of Europe, this snowy wonderland is well worth a visit. After you’re done falling head over heels for the quaint towns of Austria, grab your skiing gear and hit the slopes.
