Bulgaria, fine sandy beaches

Visiting Bulgaria takes you to the Black Sea region of the Balkans and offers fine sandy beaches and laid back evenings, full of local culture. With a 3 hour 30 minute flight time from the UK this is an easily accessible destination for everyone.

Flying into Bourgas or Varna, there are plenty of resorts to choose from. Bulgaria comprises of two main thriving areas; Sunny Beach to the south and Golden Sands slightly further north. Both resorts are family friendly, offering relaxation, cultural night life and a party atmosphere if you want it.

Flying into the old seaport and fishing town of Bourgas, in the Sunny Beach region, you don't need to travel far to find wonderful blue flag beaches, excellent hotels and fabulous calm waters, ideal for water sports. The relaxing, purpose built resort of Nessebar is only a short transfer time away from Bourgas airport, and offers beautiful 5* hotels and wonderful whitewashed villas with private gardens.

Looking for something livelier then the largest resort in Bulgaria is only a few miles away; Sunny Beach has the widest and longest blue flag beach in the area, making it an excellent resort for families and groups alike, as this is also where you'll find a choice of casinos, discos and nightclubs. For something a little more cultural during your holiday in Bulgaria, then a visit to Nessebur, one of the oldest settlements in Europe, is a must. You'll find a mixture of private rooms and value for money guest houses in the old 19th century village of cobbled streets and small squares, mixed with hotels stretching along the coastline to nearby Sunny Beach.

Places to Visit

Nessebar

This UNESCO site simply oozes charm and history. Overflowing with Greek and Roman ruins, visit medieval and byzantine churches and soak up the atmosphere dedicated by the Turks and Crusaders. After the history lesson it's time to chill out on one of the beautiful beaches that Nessebar has to offer.

Aqua Paradise

Located near Nessebar this huge water park is a fun filled day out for the whole family with 20 fantastic water rides and slides. It even has a castle with towers, bridges and a labyrinth.

Family Cruise

Ever fancied learning how to sail? Well why not try it on a catamaran as you sail through the Black Sea. You can have a go at hoisting the sails and steering the vessel before stopping for a spot of lunch and a refreshing dip.

National parks, natural springs and fabulous beaches

Bulgaria's other main tourist area is Golden Sands in the Varna Region. A relaxed cosmopolitan city, Varna offers a huge range of culture and fun. With traditional Bulgarian bars, nightclubs and restaurants serving authentic local wine and cuisine. Mix the full architectural history found all over this city with modern hotels and a fantastic beach. Golden Sands is one of the most popular resorts in the area, another purpose built region consisting mainly of hotels, this lively resort offers value for money accommodation, a long stretch of golden sand and lively promenade. Along the whole Black Sea coastline you'll find water sports in abundance, due to the shallow calm waters, with probably the best choice being in Sunny Beach.

Local Bulgarian folklore evenings are another feature of this Balkan region, with music, dance and extravagant costumes, where lively nights are usually rounded off with a traditional fire dance, something not to be missed on Bulgaria holidays. There are over 600 natural springs in Bulgaria, so there are many spas offering therapeutic natural remedies for many aches and pains, using mineral waters and mud baths.

The region is covered with National Parks, showing off the beautiful flora and fauna of the Balkans, draped with rugged mountains, a guided walk is definitely recommended for those wanting to enjoy the natural side of the region. With horse riding and organised fishing trips also available throughout the area. With summer temperatures topping 26c and 11 hours of sunshine a day, the Balkans are definitely competing for the affections of the usual Mediterranean visitor.
