Korcula Holidays 2024/2025

Holidays in Korcula take you on a trip to an island of contrasts. Thick forest dominates the interior landscape, while around the coast are colourful fishing villages where fishermen unload their catch each day. You’re never far from a beach, with charming pebbled bays like Zrnovska Banja, where windsurfers breeze across the water, or sandy havens such as Plaza Przina, where kids enjoy playing in the sand before cooling off in the clear-blue water.

Korcula Town, or ‘Little Dubrovnik’ as it’s known, bears a striking similarity to the famous medieval city of Dubrovnik, with ricotta-topped houses, city walls and historical landmarks aplenty.

Old Town treasures

The Old Town sits on a small peninsula. Stone houses with ricotta roofs are packed tightly together, hemmed in by the city walls, against a backdrop of deep, blue water and iridescent vegetation. Visit St Mark’s Cathedral, which overlooks the square in the centre of the town. The Gothic- and Renaissance-style cathedral was built in the 15th century out of local limestone. It has several notable works of art on display, including paintings by Italian artist Tintoretto. Across the square is the Arneri Palace, known for its elegant, intricate design and pretty courtyard.

Korcula lays claim to Marco Polo as its most famous son, and the house where he was born is open to visitors. Climb to the top floor for some amazing views out over the water.

From bike to vineyard

Why not add an active twist to your Korcula holiday by booking on a tour and exploring the island by mountain bike? Learn about the history and culture of this intriguing island from a local tour guide. The scenery is incredible.

Ride through olive groves and vineyards, stop to capture photographs of striking views, and educate yourself about the regional wines on a wine-tasting session at a Korculan vineyard. Then, make your way to one of the lesser-known bays and re-energise as you relax in the sun for the afternoon. Or if you’re still looking for adventure, put on a mask and go snorkelling, and discover what lies deep beneath the crystal-clear water.

Motorboat over to Hvar

Make memories of your holiday to Korcula when you hop on board a boat and cruise over to the island of Hvar. As the boat cuts a swathe through the waves, enjoy the glorious views of the surrounding landscape before arriving on Hvar, a luxurious island which holds the title for enjoying the most sunshine hours in all Croatia.

Amble along the port promenade there and stop for a coffee before making your way to the old town, via Trg Sv Stjepana, one of the largest squares in Dalmatia, which runs from the harbour to St Stephen’s Cathedral. Make sure you visit the Benedictine Convent where the poet Hanibal Lucic was born. Then, finish the day with a walk up to Fortica, a Medieval castle with some of the best views of Hvar and the neighbouring Pakleni Islands.

Bask at the beach

One of the main reasons people take holidays to Croatia is the amazing beaches, and Korcula is no exception. Zrnovska Banja is a secluded, sheltered bay. Its shallow waters are perfect for little legs to go paddling in while teenagers jump off the nearby jetty.

Vela Przina is a popular sandy beach which gets crowded in the summer. Holidaymakers play volleyball on the beach and stroll through the vineyards and pine forests that surround it. For a different beach experience, head to Lenga, with its striking views across the bay of mountains and the entire archipelago. It’s a good spot for diving, or just relaxing with a good book and soaking up the peaceful ambience.

Dance until dawn

You’ve got to have one big night out on your Korcula holiday, so start at the most unusual bar in town, Cafe Bar Massimo Korcula. You’ll find it up a ladder, in the turret of Zakerjan Tower in Korcula Town. It’s the place to be at dusk, to get that all-important selfie with a backdrop of the sun setting on the glimmering water.

The area around the bus station in the town has several bars, and there is also a smattering of live music venues in the old town. If you’re out and about on a Monday or Thursday evening, don’t miss the Moreška sword dances, held inside the city walls. Two groups of men dressed in red and black, wield swords in a fierce dance, in a truly unique spectacle.

The narrow alleyways of Korcula are steeped in the history of Medieval Croatia. Whether you visit the city for the spectacular views of its lush-green landscape, to immerse yourself in its vibrant art and culture or to relax on its appealing beaches, you’ll leave with fantastic memories of one of Croatia’s most illustrious islands.
