Porec, a town of old and new
Dating back to prehistoric times, Porec has been pulling in the crowds for around 3,000 years. Having been conquered by the Romans and the Venetians, to name but a few, as you wander around Porec’s old town you’ll recognise traces of its former occupants. And at the same time can enjoy yourself with all the contemporary delights that this town has to offer.
With its access to pebbly and sandy beaches, as well as its fantastic architecture, Porec is a destination with a difference. People-watching is easy here, with many yachts and luxury boats mooring in Porec harbour.
Watery fun in and around Porec
As much about the new as it is the old, there’s a modern waterpark in Porec that’s fantastic fun for the entire family. Watercolors has eight pools and 12 slides, plus there are children’s playgrounds, an inflatable boxing ring, as well as a kid’s rodeo.
There are also adventures going on beneath the waves. The Porec Diving Centre is the place for experienced and learner divers to start your exciting adventure. Based at Brulo Bay, easily accessible from Porec, the centre can be accessed by tourist train, water taxi or car.
For some real adrenaline and excitement, hover above the sea on a flyboard, hire a jetski or even spend the day on a jetski safari. Families are also catered for and can have fantastic fun when taking a ride on a banana boat.
Astonishing architectural beauty
Porec is a beautiful town. There are three 15th-century Venetian towers, as well as countless amazing sights in the old town area. As well as the Episcopal Complex of Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the list of this town’s architectural splendours just continues.
You can spend a wonderful day exploring this intriguing destination and one of the best places to start your adventure is Decumanus street. The must-see Romanesque House is situated here and is well worth a photograph, though there isn’t any access to the interior of the house at present. The contemporary Trg Marafor square here is built on the town’s original Roman forum and you can still see remains of the original mosaic floor.
If you feel like a spot of retail therapy to break up your day, then Ul. Boze Milanovica, is the place where you can pursue your shopping dreams. You can buy most things in the shops on this street, but this is particularly the place to look out for some jewellery bargains.
Feasting is fun
Porec has a wide selection of restaurants. You’ll recognise some of the dishes, though others may offer a totally new eating experience. The local Istrian food is influenced by its proximity to Italy, with Venice only a two hour and 40-minute drive away.
You’ll find seafood on most menus and truffle on some, as Croatia has a growing reputation for the quality of its truffles. To sample Istrian cooking at its best, try the cool Konoba Cakula restaurant, which is popular for its tapas and seafood, pasta and truffles and a whole variety of meat and other specialities.
Savour the sea
No Croatia holiday is complete without a trip to the coast and, although Porec is on the seafront, the most accessible beaches are to the south and north of the city. Many also head to the wonderful island of Saint Nicholas to enjoy swimming. This diminutive island is just off the Porec coast and offers hotels and restaurants, as well as a choice of manmade beaches that are easy to swim from.
Extraordinary underground wonders
Enter a fairytale underground world when you visit the Baredine Grotto. This extraordinary destination is only a nine-minute drive away from Porec and is well worth a visit. The Baredine caves have an impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites, and if you take a 40-minute tour you’ll probably encounter small albino sightless lizards, extraordinary rock formations and various artefacts.
