Fascinating history and exciting culture
Split holidays can easily engulf you in their fascinating history and exciting culture. In AD 295, Emperor Diocletian bought a vast expanse of deserted land just outside his home town of Salona, and promptly built a lavish and opulent Palace on it.
Many years later, when Salona was invaded by Pagan tribes, the people of the town took refuge within the palace walls, settled there and hence the city of Split was born. From its early Roman beginnings, through centuries of Venetian rule, it passed onto Austria Hungary after the fall of Venice and eventually after the Second World War, the city became part of Yugoslavia. In 1991 Croatia declared itself independent of Yugoslavia and therefore the Split we see today is part of the beautiful country of Croatia.
