Amazing culture and history

If history and culture is more up your street why not take a trip to visit one of the ancient monuments or charming monasteries. The Monastery of Saint John is located north of Gouves in the village of Anopoli. The Monastery of Saint John used to be part of the Saint George Monastery which was abandoned by frequent pirate raids that happened in the fifteenth and sixteenth century therefore all the monks moved to the monastery of Saint John.

During the Turkish occupation of Crete the monastery hosted Cretan revolutionaries and a secret school which lead to the Turks to destroy it and slaughter the people of Anopoli and the monks that occupied the monastery of Saint John in July 1896. The monastery was founded again some years later. Skotino Cave is another excursion you can take which is a very important sacred cave and one of the deepest with a depth of one hundred and sixty metres and has four levels. It was first investigated by archaeologist Evans and again in 1962 by K. Davaras who carried out a systematic excavations uncovering parts of vases, bones and bronze figurines dating from the Neolithic to Roman periods. Like many other caves, it appears to have some religious importance and some people even believe this was the labyrinth of the legendary Minotaur.
