Quick Tips

Exceptional blue flag beaches and wonderful excursions

Gouves holidays are a wonderful destination for families and couples. Gouves is located on the north coast of Crete and east of Heraklion. You will find your holiday to Gouves is a fabulous developing tourist resort with exceptional sandy beaches, plenty of tavernas, shops, bars, and clubs and only minutes away from quiet traditional villages inland.

Crete's climate conditions offer weather to suit every taste. From January to March snow covers the mountaintops, from April to May you will find the warm spring weather which brings out the wild flowers which appear everywhere in particular in the mountains and gorges. June is comfortably warm with peaking hot days. July and August give blazing sunshine which dries out Crete's land. Crete slowly starts to cool down in September and October bringing in the famous light winds that fan the island. The wet season in Crete comes around November time signalling the beginning of the olive harvest. The land will also soak up the pure rainfall to fill the reserves ready for the next year.

Holidays to Gouves offer a marvellous sandy beach which is well organised and is a favourite with sunbathers and swimmers. The beach has been awarded by the EU a Blue Flag for its clean golden sandy beaches, its crystalline waters and the facilities it has to offer. Holidays in Gouves can provide wonderful excursions, for instance if you like to do a bit of walking on your holidays why not try exploring the fertile fields and rolling hills a little inland or discover some of the pretty, quiet, traditional villages which are also inland from Gouves.

Amazing culture and history

If history and culture is more up your street why not take a trip to visit one of the ancient monuments or charming monasteries. The Monastery of Saint John is located north of Gouves in the village of Anopoli. The Monastery of Saint John used to be part of the Saint George Monastery which was abandoned by frequent pirate raids that happened in the fifteenth and sixteenth century therefore all the monks moved to the monastery of Saint John.

During the Turkish occupation of Crete the monastery hosted Cretan revolutionaries and a secret school which lead to the Turks to destroy it and slaughter the people of Anopoli and the monks that occupied the monastery of Saint John in July 1896. The monastery was founded again some years later. Skotino Cave is another excursion you can take which is a very important sacred cave and one of the deepest with a depth of one hundred and sixty metres and has four levels. It was first investigated by archaeologist Evans and again in 1962 by K. Davaras who carried out a systematic excavations uncovering parts of vases, bones and bronze figurines dating from the Neolithic to Roman periods. Like many other caves, it appears to have some religious importance and some people even believe this was the labyrinth of the legendary Minotaur.
