A tourist magnet by nature
Lassi was purpose-built to provide a tourist suburb to the island’s capital of Argostoli, primed to appeal to visitors booking holidays to Greece. Situated just three kilometres south down the coast, Lassi has two beautiful natural beaches and a good range of modern hotels and restaurants.
It’s easily accessible from the airport too – 20 minutes away by car – and a good base to explore further afield in Kefalonia should you wish. What you won’t find in historic culture here, Lassi makes up for in lively charm. The atmosphere and action centres on the main street and drifts down to the shore, where you’ll find beach bars and excellent facilities.
Stay in Lassi to enjoy the sunshine sands and traditional eateries or travel further afield to soak up the rest Kefalonia has to offer. From Lassi you can walk, bus or taxi to Argostoli, hire a car to visit the mountains or hop on a ferry to the village of Lixouri across the bay.
Made for holidays
Unlike many villages in Kefalonia, Lassi is purpose-built. There’s plenty to keep you entertained as bustling restaurants and bars line the main street. You’ll find all the amenities you need for a holiday including a mini mart and pharmacy, with Argostoli the place to go for large-scale gift and souvenir shopping. You’ll also find craft shops in Lithostrotos as well as a daily market selling local produce such as the famously delectable Ionian honey.
Two big beaches
Lassi benefits from two central beaches, both walking distance from the hotels in the resort. Makris Gialos literally means ‘long sandy beach’. Super clean and organised, here you’ll find toilets, showers and changing facilities as well as sunloungers and a beach bar.
Right next door is Makris’ sister beach, the Blue Flag winner Platis Yialos. This second beach is equally as beautiful but slightly less crowded. Known for its unspoilt beauty and white sand bay, holidaymakers can bathe beneath the impressive mountainous backdrop or enjoy a dip in the warm, shallow waters. Both beaches attract locals from the capital, as they are the closest to Argostoli.
If you want to hire a car you’ll have a whole host of natural, white sand beaches at your fingertips. Stretching out down the west coast are numerous small bays and coves, some virtually empty outside peak season.
You don’t have to travel far for watersports either, with jet skis and pedalos available from Makris Yialos. Divers will also be pleased to find the Pirate Divers Club – a very professional dive school in Lassi offering dives to local ship wrecks.
A big helping of food and drink
Restaurants in Lassi centre on the main street and beachfront, but some of the places further from the shore offer excellent value for money. For wholesome Greek food try the moussaka at Nefeli or bacon-wrapped chicken souvlaki at Pheadra – a restaurant with an extra dollop of class.
Mel’s is a big hit in Lassi if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat or caffeine hit. The American diner style restaurant offers burgers and milkshakes as well as great mid-afternoon coffee and cake deals.
Lassi is a hotspot for nightlife too. There are no nightclubs pumping out tunes all night but it does have a lively bar scene on the main street. The town benefits from easy access to Argostoli’s restaurant and nightlife scene too, widening the choice to more international food and DJs.
Excursions
If you haven’t gathered by now, Argostoli is the obvious place to head for a day out. The island’s capital is less than 10 minutes away and offers a dash of history and culture. Check out the Archaelogical Museum, Library and Folklore Museum, as well as the quaint town square full of cafes. On your way in you’ll also pass the Drapano Bridge – an iconic Kefalonia monument.
Kefalonia is a beautiful island, full of pretty villages and national parks. Although you can book tours from Argostoli, a car gives you more freedom to stop in an old fishing village for a bite to eat.
If you fancy a challenge, you’ll find one at Mount Aenos. As the highest mountain in the Ionian islands – towering one mile above sea level – you can hike to the top for spectacular views. You can drive most of the way up too, just remember it’s not so hot up there.
