Take it easy in Kremasti

This small northern resort in Rhodes has a laid-back vibe and a charming tree-lined main square. Things in Kremasti move at a slow pace and holidays here are all about relaxation and taking it easy. Restaurants, hotels and the beach are all within walking distance, and you’ll find lots of activities to keep you occupied, all within the town’s small centre.

The beach at Kremasti is the resort’s jewel, and holiday-goers can enjoy topping up their tans on the blissfully underpopulated 10-kilometre stretch of sand. There’s also a huge range of watersports available along the coast and plenty of ancient ruins to explore throughout the area.

Beach lovers' paradise

Kremasti’s 10-kilometre sand and shingle beach is the pride and joy of the resort and the most popular destination for those staying in the area. Even though it’s a hotspot for Rhodes holiday-goers there’s still lots of secluded spots on the sand where you can unwind and sunbathe in peace. On a clear day you might even be able to see the mountains in the distance.

Restaurants dot the sands, so you can easily grab a bite to eat or drink before heading back to the water. Kremasti beach gets a good helping of sea breeze, making this coastline a superb spot to try out some windsurfing or kiteboarding. In-depth classes are available to sign up to on the beach, so even if you’re a beginner you’ll be riding the waves in no time at all.

Packed full of history

For a small resort Kremasti is jam-packed with historical structures and buildings, and if you’re interested in Greek culture this town is the ideal holiday spot for you. The tall whitewashed church of Penagia Kremasti is a sight to behold, with fascinating architecture on the outside and beautiful golden murals housed on the inside.

Just up the hill from the resort is the 15th-century medieval castle which you can explore in-depth by taking a tour. This hilltop provides incredible views of the coast that are worth every inch of the climb. The whole town of Kremasti is saturated with classic Greek culture – even the town’s library is designed to look like Rome’s Pantheon.

Traditional tastes and late-night drinks

You’ll receive the authentic Greek dining experience in Kremasti. All along the beach and into the town centre are fantastic Greek tavernas, serving up fresh seafood dishes made with fish caught fresh from the water as well as classic meals like souvlaki and moussaka. You’ll also find steakhouses and Italian restaurants, as well as pubs cooking exceptional full English breakfasts for those after a little taste of home.

In the evening the resort slows down – there are no wild parties in Kremasti. What you will see are local restaurants, tavernas and pubs keeping their doors open late so you can relax over a leisurely glass of wine or beer.

It's festival time

One of the best times to visit Kremasti is in August during the 10-day Panagia Festival. This celebration begins with a children’s fun fair, and sees traditional handicrafts and folk art displayed in the main square.

The middle of August – usually the 15th – is the main festival day, when the town partakes in a feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Book Rhodes holiday packages around this time and you’ll experience a colourful and exciting event with barbecues in the main square, parades and traditional dancing. Thousands of pilgrims come to the Panagia Festival to pray at the Penagia Kremasti every year.

Just next door

Only 20 minutes from Kremasti by car is the thriving capital city of Rhodes Town. This metropolis has it all, with cultural attractions and historical architecture that includes the citadel, the Acropolis, the palace, and numerous temples and statues. It’s a Greek-history lover’s dream. Rhodes Town also has a great selection of nightlife venues, including cocktail bars and pubs that host live music.

If you’re looking to do a little shopping this holiday, Rhodes Town is on hand to help with your retail therapy. Here you’ll find plenty of handmade and decorated ceramics as well as boutique shops and craft stalls. With so many places to shop you’re destined to find that ideal souvenir for back home in no time at all.
