Water parks, crocodiles and golf

There are 7 beaches to choose from in Albufeira alone so there’s little chance of over crowding here. Once a sleepy fishing village and now one of the Algarve’s largest resorts, the boats can still be seen bobbing along the shoreline bringing home tonight’s fresh offerings for supper. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, discreet shops, cafes and bars, and still home to many whitewashed fishing cottages. The main beach can be reached from here via a tunnel. If it’s something a little livelier you are looking for then head to ‘The Strip’, a parade of bars and clubs giving the option to party all night long.

Water sports are a great pastime to enjoy on Albufeira holidays with jet skiing, water skiing, windsurfing and even wreck diving all available from here.

Aqualand is an adventurous day out for all the family, ride the Anaconda corkscrew or brave the Kamikaze, but don’t worry, there are plenty of gentler rides to choose from. The Zoo Marine Centre at Guia is home to sharks and alligators, Amazonia will amaze you with its live shows, crocodiles, alligators and tropical birds. Krazy World is another family favourite with fairground attractions and animal handling sessions, or looking further afield, take a day trip to Seville in Spain. An excursion inland offers stunning scenery with the contrast from the beach of lush green vegetation, fig trees and olive groves.

Shopping, nightlife and chicken piri piri

If you’re looking for a little bit of culture, then head into nearby Silves, with historic settlements and an imposing castle offering an insight into the history of this fascinating area. Albufeira is a golfer’s paradise with 12 excellent courses nearby, some championship standard with many people choosing this reason alone to spend their holidays in Albufeira, and making it the ideal destination for last minute golf holidays to Europe.

Shopping, of course, is another favourite pastime for many and Albufeira won’t disappoint, with everything from souvenirs and beachwear to designer handbags. The Gypsy Flea market hits town twice a month on a Tuesday and offers the chance to haggle for locally made jewellery and colourful pottery. Nightlife in Albufeira is really whatever you want to make it, there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants offering family fun, live music and karaoke singing, with the party atmosphere of Montechoro close to hand and a Casino in Vilamoura if you are feeling lucky.

Restaurants offer varied menus with plenty of English choices, but the favoured dishes here are grilled sardines, lobster, octopus and the famous chicken piri piri. Accommodation is extremely good value for money, with hotel board options, self catering apartments and pretty white washed villas stretching back from the beach. Strict building rules have ensured that Albufeira has remained a very pretty resort, and families, couples, the young party crowd and golfers flock back year after year, whichever kind of holiday you are looking for, Albufeira will certainly fit the bill. Places to Visit

Slide and Splash

– Considered to be one of the biggest and best water parks in Europe, Slide and Splash has something for all ages from the Black Hole and Kamikaze for the daredevils to smaller slides and splash areas for the little ones.

Zoomarine

– Located in the town of Guia, a few kilometres from Albufeira, the whole family can enjoy a day out at Zoomarine with its water slides and pools, sea lions and sharks, parrots and birds of prey, but the star of the show, has to be the chance to swim with the dolphins!

4×4 Jeep Safari

– Take an exhilarating jeep safari through the Algarve’s stunning countryside. This all terrain trip will take you off the beaten track through rivers, over hills and past fig, orange and eucalyptus groves. Stop at a traditional village for lunch before heading back to base. Not one for the feint hearted as the terrain can get quite rough.
