Where the ancient and the modern collide

Calpe has been settled for centuries, first by Iberian tribes, and then by the Romans as a colony for salting and drying fish. You’ll still find ancient ruins here, and even today Calpe is renowned for its seafood dishes.

The historic district is surrounded by double-walled fortifications which were built as a defence from pirate attacks. One of the highlights of the old town is a well-preserved bastion, Torreón de la Peça. Inside you’ll find a museum where there are interesting exhibitions of old toys and cameras.

The old town within these ancient walls is a fascinating part of Calpe. It’s a labyrinth of narrow streets and houses with flower-filled balconies. You’ll marvel over the examples of Gothic and Moorish architecture here, as well as the colourful murals on display. There are lots of pretty squares lined with cafés to stop for refreshments.

Calpe also has a modern side with broad boulevards and contemporary apartment blocks. The beachfront promenade is lined with trendy bars, restaurants, and all the amenities you’ll need to enjoy a lively beach break.

Rock formations and ruins

Make sure you spend some time of your holidays in Calpe exploring the fantastic rock formations and ruins around the town. The shoreline of Calpe is dominated by the vast Rock of Ifach, which towers 332 metres high. It’s actually a nature reserve with a steep footpath that takes you right to the summit. The views from here are fantastic.

You’ll also find the remains of a medieval town, Ifac located at the foot of the rock. Around 90 burial sites have been discovered here. The rock also shelters the ancient Roman site of the Baths of the Queen. Alongside the thermal bath fortifications, you’ll find interesting architecture and mosaics.

Miles of coastline

Although the area is rich in history, most Calpe holidays centre around the beach. There are two long, sandy beaches on either side of the Rock of Ifach. Cantal-Roig beach is a Blue Flag beach with calm turquoise waters which are perfect for swimming with children. It’s close to the marina’s many seafood restaurants too.

Meanwhile, Arenal Bol Beach is Calpe’s longest and liveliest stretch of sand. It’s bordered by a seafront promenade lined with souvenir shops, ice cream stands, bars and restaurants. On the beach you’ll find sun loungers and parasols. There’s even a special service to help those with limited mobility enjoy the water, running during the summer months.

There are numerous small coves, many surrounding The Rock of Ifach, which are only accessible by boat. This means that even during the busiest time of year, you’ll always find a quiet spot.

Calpe is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. There are so many activities on offer here, including jet-skiing, kayaking and wakeboarding. Boat trips to the nearby coves are also available, and the Rock of Ifach boasts several famous diving sites.
