A sleepy sunshine spot
Santa Susanna edges on the quieter side, as far as Spanish holidays go, but you’ll still find a handful of restaurants and bars to entertain you day and night. Barcelona is just up the coast – less than an hour away by train – and there are other local attractions to keep you busy. You can choose to get to know the area or opt for Santa Susanna as a peaceful getaway of its own.
A day at the beach
Holidays to Costa Brava are all about relaxing on the stunning expanse of Spanish shoreline. Santa Susanna’s palm tree-lined shores extend for two kilometers and are divided into three beaches, each of which offers a unique experience along the coast. While just lazing around on the beach is always an option, there is plenty more to do here. For rentable sun loungers, a handful of water sports and beach volleyball areas, there’s Llevant Beach. Its shores are excellent for families who want to enjoy beachside activities.
Dunes Beach has a more extensive list of water sports and a bigger range of refreshment stalls. Although none of the beaches in Santa Susanna are too busy, for those times when you just want to get away from it all, there’s Caletes Beach. This quiet cove is kept peaceful and contained by a line of surrounding rocks, meaning its sands provide a truly tranquil spot.
The great outdoors
Wedged between the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Montnegre – a large natural park whose hilly landscape overlooks the village – Santa Susanna is the active traveller’s paradise. The resort is compact, making it wonderfully walkable, and hiking and biking excursions await in the Massif Montnegre. Visitors can bike between historic towers and chapels hidden away in the hillside and surrounding forests on a self-guided tour.
The Parc El Castell in neighbouring Malgrat de Mar is also a pristine stretch of grass from which to enjoy the natural views. We advise picking up some lunch from local markets as it’s a great spot for a picnic. There is even a little funicular lift so you don’t have to climb or push your bike up the hill.
Bars and restaurants
Santa Susanna comes alive at night, with bars and restaurants featuring live music from local musicians and entertainment from Flamenco dancers. Although the atmosphere is generally relaxed, there are a couple of clubs that pump house music until the early hours, such as Overland and QK Disco.
There are a variety of restaurants in Santa Susanna. There are gorgeous ivy-covered terraces at La Pergola, classic paella at Pepe Pollo or the homely feel of ex-pat bar and eatery the Drunken Duck. From traditional Catalan eats to Mexican cuisine or a full English breakfast, Santa Susanna restaurants dish up meals for every palate.
Up the coast
The resort’s close proximity to the area’s biggest city, Barcelona, means day trips up the coast are popular. Barcelona is home to bouncing bars and clubs and remains popular with younger guests enjoying All Inclusive holidays to Costa Brava.
