Nerja's beaches

Nerja is home to no fewer than 10 different beaches, all with their own character. On some you’ll find the classic combination of soft, white sand and clear blue water, but on others you’ll find the sand is dark and volcanic, and a few are rocky and secluded.

The most popular beach is Playa Burriana, which is in the east end of town and the premier spot for swimming. It’s a European Blue Flag award winner and it has all the facilities that you’ll need for fun and safe days spent by the water.

Other beaches include El Playazo, which isn’t as developed as some of the others but it’s a great place to find a quiet spot and a reasonably priced Spanish meal. Then there’s La Caleta, a picturesque and secluded beach in the village of Maro and accessed through farmland. Maro beach itself is also a pretty spot that’s popular in summer. Some beaches in Nerja are perfect for just relaxing and soaking up the sun, others are good for watersports, some are good for swimming – simply choose the best beach for whatever you happen to feel like doing on the day.

Nerja caves

Nerja is unusual in that it doesn’t just offer holiday experiences on the earth’s surface. The Nerja caves are what turn Nerja from a great holiday destination into an exceptional one. Discovered in 1959 by a group of young locals out hunting bats, the caves stretch for five kilometres and are made up of enormous caverns and amazing clusters of stalagmites and stalactites. There are guided tours for up to 50 people twice a day, which are led by the actor Miguel Joven, known in Spain for playing ‘Tito’ in the popular series Verano Azul.

Not all of the caves are safe enough to be open to the public, but there are three public galleries all containing a number of halls. One of the halls has been converted into a stunning auditorium which has witnessed some of the world’s greatest musicians making the most of its unique acoustics.

Tutti frutti

Nerja is home to a surprisingly vibrant and exciting nightlife, and most of it is concentrated around the charmingly named Tutti Frutti square.

You’ll find that there are lots of themes for you to choose from, including traditional Irish and British pubs showing the big matches, as well as lively flamenco bars where you can have a go at some traditional Spanish dancing.

Not only are there plenty of places to relax, enjoy a meal and close things off with a digestif or two, but there are also trendy nightclubs in Nerja that are open until the magical hour of 6am – so your nights out can be big or small. All in all Nerja offers all kinds of nightlife to all kinds of people, so you’re bound to find a place that suits your mood when you decide to go out during your stay.

Things to do in Nerja

As well as the town, the beaches and the marvellous caves, there are lots of other exciting things to do during a cheap holiday to Costa del Sol. Because of the wonderful countryside that surrounds Nerja outdoor pursuits are very popular, ranging from hikes around the mountains to motocross adventure days.

Of course the sea and coastline also create lots of opportunities for new things for you to try. The most famous part of town is the Balcón de Europa – the ‘balcony of Europe’ – where, from a rocky ledge, you have incredible views up and down the coast and over the Mediterranean. On Playa Burriana you can hire pedalos, banana boats and jet skis, or go scuba diving or snorkelling with trained instructors. You could also try your hand at fishing with the locals.

If all of this isn’t enough, you’re surrounded by the beauty of the Andalusia region. There’s always the option to hire a car and explore what all of the Costa del Sol has to offer.
