Culture and history
Although it is unclear as to the exact origins of Marmaris, historians believe there has been a castle here since 3000BC. The castle was rebuilt from scratch in 1522 when Marmaris was used as a base for the Ottoman Navy. Work is continuously ongoing to return the castle to its original glory and it is today being used as a museum. Marmaris’ main industry today is tourism with over 350,000 tourists visiting every year.
