The Bakotu is the epitome of best-of-both – it’s got a central, close-to-the-beach position, but is also right by a popular bird-watching spot.
Nature lovers will be in their element here. After all, it’s British naturalist Chris Packham’s first choice when staying in The Gambia. It’s all down to the viewing platform, which looks across Kotu’s creek.

There’s a suitably tropical atmosphere to the pool – with palms, thatched parasols and a crocodile sculpture. A bar keeps you topped up with drinks, too.
Dine on locally grown, organic produce at the Captain’s Table à la carte restaurant. Even the live music’s got a local edge here – it’s usually played on a kora, a West African lute-like instrument.
Baobab’s open for all three meals, too, offering set menus and a children’s menu. Next door, Boss Lady’s* a popular choice for authentic Gambian fare.
On top of the live music at the Captain’s Table restaurant, dance troupes swing by on a weekly basis.
There’s nature all around you at the Bakotu – think birds, monkeys and monitor lizards. Near Kotu Bridge, you can sign up for tours* with local wildlife experts.
This place has a relaxed, back-to-nature vibe. You can sunbathe by the pool, which is bordered by a bar. Or, head to the viewing platform to catch a glimpse of some local wildlife. Food-wise, you’ve got the main à la carte restaurant and another with set menus.
