Built on a promontory along the east coast of Corfu, and flanked by bustling harbours full of elegant new yachts and quaint old fishing boats. Corfu Town has had many influences over the years all merging to create the fascinating place that it is today. Venetian architecture and narrow winding streets are reminiscent of Italy, while the elegant shops and cafes of the Liston show off the classy influence of the French.

The beaches here are long and sandy interspersed by pretty shingle coves, although you won’t sit still for long as there’s so much to see on holidays in Corfu Town. Wander the narrow streets, visit picturesque squares, pretty churches, museums, galleries and archaeological sites. The stunning fortresses that stand guard over the old town offer a fascinating insight into life gone by with amazing views of Corfu from above. The main esplanade or Spianada is Corfu Town’s largest square and the main meeting place of the town and has everything covered, from street cafes, a bandstand, museums, galleries and even a cricket pitch! The gardens are beautiful and aromatic, so make sure you spend some time here relaxing and just watching the world go by.

Places to Visit

The Old Fort (Paleo Frourio)

– Dating way back to the 8th Century the ‘Old Fort’ as it’s commonly known has protected Corfu Town throughout a number of historically significant conflicts. Originally a Byzantine castle, it was rebuilt by the Venetians in its first phase (1400-1500)– the original Byzantine walls were strengthened and the canal opened (Contra-Fossa), which also created the artificial island accessed by a movable bridge.

The Liston

– Situated in the western side of the Esplanade Square, the Liston is fine building which terrace houses some of the finest and more luxurious cafes and restaurants of the island.
