The Old Fort (Paleo Frourio)
– Dating way back to the 8th Century the ‘Old Fort’ as it’s commonly known has protected Corfu Town throughout a number of historically significant conflicts. Originally a Byzantine castle, it was rebuilt by the Venetians in its first phase (1400-1500) the original Byzantine walls were strengthened and the canal opened (Contra-Fossa), which also created the artificial island accessed by a movable bridge.
